Weekly Warrior by: Sierra Folsom 3/8/17

Hello! As you know Tom Schumann and Andy Carpenter recently passed away. They both were very supportive of the students here. Tom spent lots of time talking to us about science and math, and Andy and his wife Doris were supporting every single one of our home basketball games. There will be a memorial and potluck for Andy on Sunday March 12 in the school gym at 1:00 pm. A memorial luncheon for Tom Schumann is scheduled for April 8th at 1 p.m. at the Downieville Community Hall.
There will be an Alumni Basketball Game on Saturday the 11th at 2:00 pm. There will also be concessions. Tennis and golf are starting.
On Monday, February 27th the students enjoyed a presentation given by John Muir Lawes who wrote The Lawes’ Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada. He gave a great presentation about observation and now all of the science classes have nature journals to record in, thanks to the Land Trust and Mr. Lawes.
On Thursday March 2, we enjoyed a great Read Across America Day. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Guffin and the Jr. High and High School students for reading. In celebration of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Mrs. Galan’s kindergarten, 1rst, and 2nd grade class were busy reading while they ate green eggs and ham. The class has also been learning all about gravity and magnetism.                                                                          March 2-4th, a group of 7th-8th graders went to the annual REACH conference in Chico. Austin Foster said it was a fun experience for him. Thursday, March 23rd – Friday, March 25th a group of 9-12th graders are going to REACH.
Miss Maire’s class is excited for their field trip on March 8th to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and California Academy of Science. Currently they are learning about seeds, making ceramics for the school greenhouse and they are writing ocean creature reports.
The seniors were in Loyalton on March 2nd doing Mock Interviews. They wrote resumes and practiced interviewing. They said it was both successful and helpful. The seniors thought the interviewers were very nice and felt it was great preparation for the future.
Have a great week!
