The Downieville Tennis and Education Association (DTEA) is proud to announce the naming of Downieville’s tennis court in honor of founding member of DTEA, Mary P. Johnsen. There will be a dedication ceremony Saturday, September 28 at 11am at the tennis court.
Mary and her husband, Lt. Col. John Johnsen, USA, retired to Downieville in 1997 and became active community volunteers in their 16 years as residents. Mary’s involvement in the Sierra County community included service on the Western Sierra Residential Center board, service as the treasurer of the Golden Rays Incorporated Seniors organization, service as a member of the Sierra County Mental Health Advisory committee, service as a Downieville Schools GATE advisor, organizer of the Downieville community Veterans Day memorials, and a decades long column writer for the Mountain Messenger newspaper.
Mary organized a community tennis program for all ages, but especially designed for school age youth that she mentored for over a decade, a program that continues to this day and for which she will always be remembered.
DTEA’s goal is to provide outdoor activity that encourages local youth to exercise, learn skills and develop a sense of respect and fair play while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow players. During the summer, tennis programs are provided free of charge 2-3 mornings each week for youth ages 5 through 17. The program emphasizes techniques for playing, exercises for fitness, sportsmanship for courteous attitudes, and the sharing of respect between participants. We also provide weekly evening lessons for adults.
The Sierra County Board of Supervisors approved the name change as Resolution 2019-053 by a 5-0 unanimous vote.
Please join us in honoring Mary at the dedication ceremony Saturday, September 28 beginning at 11am at the tennis court located at 736 Main Street in Downieville. Mary will be joining us and there will food, drink, games, competition, raffle and prizes. For further information, please contact email@example.com
