Downieville–On Thursday, February 28, three students from Downieville Junior High School left for Chico, with Leader Shelly Fischer of the local Friday Night Live group, driving.
They headed for Chico for Reach for the Future, a 3 day teen conference. At Reach, studets join in with about 300 other students from surrounding areas.
Reach For The Future is specifically designed to ensure young people learn through activities that stimulate the heart, mind and body. The conference is planned and implemented by youth to provide opportunities for young people to safely express and learn about the leader inside of them through Challenge Day, workshops and outdoor low and high rope elements.
The first day, all students join in Challenge Day. Challenge Day is an award winning day-long experiential program that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection of diversity, truth, abd full expression.
At a Challenge Day, teenage students, teachers, school counselors, parents, and members of the community are challenged to step out of their comfort zones, open their hearts, and build connections with others. Two trained Challenge Day Leaders guide participants through a carefully-designed series of games, activities, and trust-building exercises that break down the walls of separation and create new levels of empathy and respect.
The Challenge Day program reduces teasing and bullying, teaches tools for peaceful conflict resolution, and inspires teens and adults to work together as forces for positive change in the world.
The following day, students get together for breakfast before heading out to one of many workshops. Students choose from workshops such as prevent bullying, drug/alcohol prevention, under the influence, and many more. All designed to give the kids tools they need during difficult teenage times.

Friday NIght Live, run locally by Shelly, is a youth led action group that meets weekly. FNL builds leadership skills, broadens young peoples social network, implements strategies to reduce youth access to alcohol and supports young people through life challenges and situations.
“I had the most amazing time ever.”Reported one junior high student. “I can’t wait to go again next year!”
Shelly has been taking Downieville School students to Reach since 2004, and FNL funds the event so that our kids can experience this great event.
