Savannah Burr won the Sierra Zone Student Speaker Contest on March 3 in Nevada City and is moving up the ladder to the Donner Region Student Speaker Contest. That level contest is scheduled for Saturday, March 23 at 2 pm, Higgins Lions Center, 22490 East Hacienda Drive, Grass Valley, at the corner of Magnolia.
On Monday, January 28 five students displayed oratorial skills in front of an audience composed of Downieville Lions, parents, friends and teacher. Downieville teacher, Lynn Fillo, has been an integral part of the Downieville Lion’s Club speech contest for many years and always encourages the students to bring their best ideas and voice to the contest.
The program was moderated by Jim Johnston who introduced the contestants and regaled the audience with jokes that told of his age difference with the students. The “Rap” joke in particular was an indication of a generation gap.
Students Hannah Ford, Fiona Baiker, Savannah Burr, Alexis Whitaker and Sean Epps each spoke on the subject of How Do We Create and Keep Jobs in America. Tom Dines was scheduled as a contestant but was ill with the flu. Savannah Burr became the winner and will go on to represent Downieville at the District Level at the Higgins Diggins Lion’s Clubhouse south of Grass Valley on March 3.
