Snowshoe Trek to Castle Pass, Donner Summit
Saturday, March 16 from 8:30 am – 5 pm
Join SYRCL staff member Miriam Limov, River People Coordinator and Perry Norris, Executive Director for the Truckee Donner Land Trust on an all-day invigorating snowshoe trek from Donner Summit up to Castle Pass in the South Yuba River’s watershed – March 16! No experience necessary to enjoy this intermediate level trek with basic lessons available on the trail along with general wilderness travel lessons. During lunch while overlooking Donner Summit, you will learn about the water and land issues of Royal Gorge and Van Norden Meadow, areas of enormous geologic and cultural history. The trail to Castle Pass is 5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 800 feet to the pass.
After a five-month long fundraising campaign, and exacting negotiations, the Truckee Donner Land Trust has acquired 3,000 acres on Donner Summit known as Royal Gorge, and 351-acres in Negro Canyon above Donner Lake. This might be one of the most important conservation victories for the Sierra in a generation.
Explore the Yuba watershed, learn about the headwaters of the South Yuba River while making new friends!
