The Mountain Messenger 8/28/13

8/28/13 Last week’s story about the Man on the Street interview with Editor of the Mountain Messenger Don Russell, resulted in a restraining order being issued to anyone who might try to approach him and/or speak to him. In light of this information the Prospect will now have to report on his activities from afar and surreptitiously. It is important that you subscribe to the Messenger so that Don will realize all this publicity is a good thing.  His right hand assistant, Milly, has agreed to provide (secretly without Don’s knowledge) the information needed to keep track of him.  If you or anyone else reading this manage to get a candid photo of Don during his daily activities please submit it to editor@sierracountyprospect.org with a note about what he might have been doing.

Mountain Messenger (real paper newspaper) 8/21/13

8/21/13 This week we decided to have a Man on the Street interview section in the Prospect and our first interviewee is none other than Editor of the Mountain Messenger, Don Russell. The result was less than expected however in the interest of true journalism here is the result..

SCP – So Mr. Russell what was the most momentous moment of your life?

DR – What the hell kind of question is that? Momentous moment– ha– every moment of my life has been mountainous, and I scaled them all, they thought they could keep me down, but they didn’t. My mother was right about me!

SCP – I’m curious to know who  “they” is. Is there someone in particular or are you just ranting about the establishment media?

DR – Well, of course mainstream media has always tried to squash me. I take away their readers. The real, unfettered, reality of newsworthy news is only in the Messenger. Everyone else has to worry about corporate responsibilty to the advertisers. I owe my advertisers nothing, nothing I say, now that I think about it, most of them owe me.  In particular “they” is DeVita and Fisher, they’ve been out to get me from the get go but we will see what people are reading 200 years down the road, it will be the archives of a real print newspaper. I’ll show them.

Mountain Messenger 8/14/13

8/14/13

Editor of the Mountain Messenger often takes short trips somewhere, no one knows for sure where, but he tends to suddenly be missing and then he is back. No explanation. I’ve tried to tie it into crimes in the surrounding area but there appears to be no connection. We thought he might have a part time job elsewhere, but all the current bartender jobs are filled. He’s been seen in the Nevada City area but according to rumor he keeps one of his wives there and also has a friend there called Nuke. Someone said he has other friends there but we don’t see how that can be. Anyhow it will remain a mystery until we know for sure. If you spot him on a corner selling newspapers please snap a picture and send it to editor@sierracountyprospect.org

BTW Today is Milly’s birthday. Please send her a card or money for her birthday. She is getting old and it is difficult for her to accept this.

Supervisor Paul Roen listens carefully as Editor Don Russell explains exactly what county government is about or maybe how Paul should run his ranch... not ever really clear to determine what Don is talking about....

Mountain Messenger 8/7/13

The Mountain Messenger is California’s Oldest Weekly newspaper. One of the ways you know it is old is because their computer equipment is old, the newspaper racks are old, and supposedly Milly is still paid the going rate in 1975 and Don Russell the Editor often forgets where he is or why he is there. The most important thing you need to take from this message is ….. subscribe to the Messenger, buy an ad, for heaven sakes do something before Jeff Bezos decides to buy the paper out from under us. We are fairly certain Jeff would never give Milly a raise. (If you talk to Milly, call her Jill, as she doesn’t want anyone to know she has such an old-fashioned name.)

The Mountain Messenger 7/31/13

7/31/13

On very rare occasions Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger, appears in public. Recently he attended the wedding of Brad Jackson and Tessa Jordan of Downieville who held their wedding in Reno. Many other friends and family attended the wedding and the reception which was held at a baseball game. Most everyone understood what was going on, whereas it appears Don isn’t sure why he is at a baseball game or how he got there, panicked he is looking around to see if he is really there. Milly the person who keeps him safe along with his better half, Irene, made sure he was okay and got him home safe.

Don panics wondering where he is.. and photographer Ed Wharton captures the moment.

The Mountain Messenger (real paper) 7/24/13

7/24/13

Every week I attempt to write something interesting about the Mountain Messenger and the three people who keep it running. The Editor of All Things, Don Russell, then there is the little short, long haired woman, Milly, who works in the office and occasionally pretends to work and answers the phone, and then there is Ross, not many people see him, he works in the dead of night silently and mysteriously and is on call for computer failures and other misfortunate accidents of computerworld. So what can I say except it helps to keep everyone fed if you buy ads or subscriptions to the Mountain Messenger. Here’s another classic pose of Don at work.

In a candid moment apparently Don is making an important point in a conversation, possibly preparing to sneeze or just is pausing in an attempt to remember what he was talking about.

The Mountain Messenger (real paper) 7/17/13

7/17/13  As usual Don Russell, Editor of Mt Mess, attended the Board of Supervisors Meeting in Loyalton on Tuesday, July 16. Mr. Russell attends most every Board of Supervisors meeting whether in Loyalton or Downieville, unless he is visiting his beloved mother in Detroit. Don has always been known as devoted to his mother. He does not like children, but loves his wife, Irene, and is kind to people who are in need of assistance. Many people think of Don as capable, professional and talented. He is indeed talented. I think you would get to know him better, if in fact you subscribed to his real paper news medium. Below the photograph you will find a subscription form, you will see from the photo, Don needs to make more money so please subscribe.

The Mountain Messenger (real paper) 7/10/13

7/10/13   It appears there is another reason to help Don Russell, Editor of Mt Mess, as recently the love of his life, (other than his mother in Detroit) Irene, is retiring from her position as a teacher in Nevada County. Unfortunately this means Don will no longer be able to count on Irene for groceries, entertainment, beer, whiskey and cigars. We must step up to the plate and buy advertising and subscriptions to the Mountain Messenger. A Mountain Messenger subscription is a wonderful gift sent to almost anyone you know. You will be on the recipients mind for a long time as they ponder the reasons you might have sent them a subscription to this historical newspaper. They will read it breathlessly every week trying to find the secret message you are sending them in the paper…. at any rate…. do something for Don, if you don’t want a subscription just send him some money.

The Mountain Messenger 7/3/13

7/3/13 There isn’t much to say about the Mountain Messenger and its’ Editor Don Russell that isn’t said by the photo below. It isn’t clear if it is the meeting (which hadn’t begun yet) the heat, or the presence of competition that elicited this response. One never knows with Mr. Russell. This week is the 4th of July edition which he uses to take up one whole page of his newspaper with the Declaration of Independence which isn’t really fair to those of us who have to fill up space with no shortcuts. Of course, because the Mess is out earlier this week it is possible to skim some of the content to use elsewhere. But anyhow feel sympathy for Don, he is aging and it is hot. So buy a subscription to his newspaper, or place an ad, yeh, that’s a good idea, buy an ad.

7/3/13 Not sure where he is or why he is there, Don pretends the heat is the problem.

The Mountain Messenger (real paper) 6/26/13

6/26/13

Many people are confused as to why the sierracountyprospect.org would devote a whole page each week to the story of The Mountain Messenger and focus on the Editor Don Russell and on occasion express sympathy at the plight of his right hand assistant who does all the work, Jill. The reality is, there is no good reason. There may be a little concern for the health and welfare of the Editor as he tends to do things he shouldn’t, (although he has quit smoking).  He writes weird editorials that make people mad at him. He prints all kinds of confusing information, some true, some not, some just his wrong opinion (unless he agrees with me and then he is right). So hopefully this will clear up the confusion as to why we care about Mt. Mess, the only answer is we just do.

Editor Don Russell sits beneath the mantra for the paper, he will print almost anything that fits.

6/19/13

Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger, attends every Board Meeting of the Sierra County Supervisors, unless he is visiting his Mother in Detroit. Don acts very professionally and many people believe he is a member of the Board or possibly the county staff on occasion someone wonders if he may have just wandered in accidentally, however he definitely is a fixed asset at the meetings. Of course, the word “asset” is used lightly in this context, but I digress, it is important that the readers of Sierra County read the Mountain Messenger as if indeed the Messenger has ample subscribers then it is possible he will be able to lower the costs of legal notices the County is required to publish in the only weekly newspaper in Sierra County authorized to accept legal notices.

Editor Don Russell holds hand near face in another feeble attempt to hide from Undersheriff Jim Concannon who appears to be at the meeting for the sole purpose of keeping an eye on Russell.

The Mountain Messenger (on real paper) 6/12/13

6/12/13

Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger, California’s Oldest Newspaper is playing dangerously close to the edge with his Freedom of Speech rights as he may be about to offend the CIA, FBI, NSA and the ROTW’s many of whom are not really known to this day, (not many even know the ROTW’s exist). Don is in particular danger because he cannot rely on the old protective standbys of being loved by children and dogs as he detests both. The JMS group has denied him membership and he is pretty much out there on his own as he has often offended the Board of Supervisors, the County Sheriff, County Employees, his Chief Administrative Assistant Jill and anyone he knows. The Fringe or Irene could be on his side, but one never knows. At any rate, it is possible some country somewhere will take him in as a propaganda writer, as he can be loose with facts.

6/12/13 Don Russell thinks about who he knows who has bail money, and how much he'll need to flee the country if he violates the Downieville Secrecy Pact.

6/5/13

Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger often uses any method possible to sell advertising and subscriptions to California’s Oldest Weekly Newspaper. Many people fall for his spiel and he then has to continue writing his pithy articles filled with words he passes off as news. Several steps above Fox News and not quite to the standard of the New York Times, many famous people read the Messenger. If you are famous, and read the Messenger please let me know because then I can make a list. Don is not willing to divulge the names of his famous readers.

Oh yeh, the Mountain Messenger something that everyone wants to read when a computer isn’t available. Once again, Editor Don Russell finds himself in hot water while trying to receive free legal advice from County Counsel Jim Curtis.. Don believes he is being harassed and maligned by a certain online publication. This is absolutely untrue and he has no proof of anything, as he does not believe in pixels and other things that make up the medium.
