The Mountain Messenger 7/3/13

7/3/13 There isn’t much to say about the Mountain Messenger and its’ Editor Don Russell that isn’t said by the photo below. It isn’t clear if it is the meeting (which hadn’t begun yet) the heat, or the presence of competition that elicited this response. One never knows with Mr. Russell. This week is the 4th of July edition which he uses to take up one whole page of his newspaper with the Declaration of Independence which isn’t really fair to those of us who have to fill up space with no shortcuts. Of course, because the Mess is out earlier this week it is possible to skim some of the content to use elsewhere. But anyhow feel sympathy for Don, he is aging and it is hot. So buy a subscription to his newspaper, or place an ad, yeh, that’s a good idea, buy an ad.

7/3/13 Not sure where he is or why he is there, Don pretends the heat is the problem.

Many people are confused as to why the sierracountyprospect.org would devote a whole page each week to the story of The Mountain Messenger and focus on the Editor Don Russell and on occasion express sympathy at the plight of his right hand assistant who does all the work, Jill. The reality is, there is no good reason. There may be a little concern for the health and welfare of the Editor as he tends to do things he shouldn’t, (although he has quit smoking).  He writes weird editorials that make people mad at him. He prints all kinds of confusing information, some true, some not, some just his wrong opinion (unless he agrees with me and then he is right). So hopefully this will clear up the confusion as to why we care about Mt. Mess, the only answer is we just do.

Editor Don Russell sits beneath the mantra for the paper, he will print almost anything that fits.

Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger, attends every Board Meeting of the Sierra County Supervisors, unless he is visiting his Mother in Detroit. Don acts very professionally and many people believe he is a member of the Board or possibly the county staff on occasion someone wonders if he may have just wandered in accidentally, however he definitely is a fixed asset at the meetings. Of course, the word “asset” is used lightly in this context, but I digress, it is important that the readers of Sierra County read the Mountain Messenger as if indeed the Messenger has ample subscribers then it is possible he will be able to lower the costs of legal notices the County is required to publish in the only weekly newspaper in Sierra County authorized to accept legal notices.

The Mountain Messenger (on real paper) 6/12/13

6/12/13

Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger, California’s Oldest Newspaper is playing dangerously close to the edge with his Freedom of Speech rights as he may be about to offend the CIA, FBI, NSA and the ROTW’s many of whom are not really known to this day, (not many even know the ROTW’s exist). Don is in particular danger because he cannot rely on the old protective standbys of being loved by children and dogs as he detests both. The JMS group has denied him membership and he is pretty much out there on his own as he has often offended the Board of Supervisors, the County Sheriff, County Employees, his Chief Administrative Assistant Jill and anyone he knows. The Fringe or Irene could be on his side, but one never knows. At any rate, it is possible some country somewhere will take him in as a propaganda writer, as he can be loose with facts.

6/12/13 Don Russell thinks about who he knows who has bail money, and how much he'll need to flee the country if he violates the Downieville Secrecy Pact.

The Mountain Messenger (real paper news) 6/5/13

6/5/13

Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger often uses any method possible to sell advertising and subscriptions to California’s Oldest Weekly Newspaper. Many people fall for his spiel and he then has to continue writing his pithy articles filled with words he passes off as news. Several steps above Fox News and not quite to the standard of the New York Times, many famous people read the Messenger. If you are famous, and read the Messenger please let me know because then I can make a list. Don is not willing to divulge the names of his famous readers.

It is obvious from the picture that Don Russell the Editor does not have any shame as he is smiling as if he has not a care in the world. That is such a shame. Please help him by filling out the subscription form below. He is older and getting closer to the golden handshake, well he doesn’t work for the County so that won’t work anyhow… so just subscribe. Oh yeh, the Mountain Messenger something that everyone wants to read when a computer isn’t available. Once again, Editor Don Russell finds himself in hot water while trying to receive free legal advice from County Counsel Jim Curtis.. Don believes he is being harassed and maligned by a certain online publication. This is absolutely untrue and he has no proof of anything, as he does not believe in pixels and other things that make up the medium.

Mountain Messenger (Real Paper) 5/15/13

5/15/13
The Mountain Messenger is California’s Oldest weekly newspaper and is read through all of California and Detroit where Don’s mother lives. People who have known Editor Don Russell as a fisherman in Alaska have subscriptions to the paper also, as it is highly regarded as fish wrap. Meanwhile Don continues to write pithy articles about almost anything he can think of while hoping something happens in Sierra County, like a County Supervisor fist fight, or someone accidentally swallowing a gold nugget, he will not report on babies being born as he doesn’t like children. (We will report that on the Prospect). Today May 15 is Don’s Birthday, he is older.
Don often spends days alone in the Sierra County Board of Supervisors Chambers hoping there might be a meeting. No one has given him the schedule and he figures he won't miss anything if he just waits till something happens.

Mountain Messenger (real paper) News 5/8/13

5/8/13

Don Russell, Editor of the esteemed Mountain Messenger demonstrates his ability to gather news every week in the pages of California’s oldest weekly newspaper. He particularly likes the bi-monthly Sierra County Board of Supervisor’s meetings as then he has interesting stuff to write about. Most of the county’s tears, cheers, jeers and violence occur at these meetings otherwise life in the rural mountains are deadly dull and bereft of news.

Editor Don Russell gathers news at the Board of Supervisors meeting in Downieville. Supervisor Jim Beard and Auditor/Treasurer/Tax Collector/Risk Manager Van Maddox pretend to be working also.

5/1/13  The Mountain Messenger, California’s Oldest Weekly Newspaper is run by Editor Don Russell, assisted by girl Friday Jill Tahija, who has no problem being overworked and underpaid, like many women today. However, Russell, being old school Journalist insists there be no harassment or mistreatment of his staff, he usually just does whatever Jill tells him. He also responds well to his better half, Irene, undoubtedly being afraid of being left alone with no one to care for him other than women waiting in the wings, but I digress. Be sure to subscribe and read the Mountain Messenger, if you can’t read the real paper newspaper has many other uses. It is well known that newspaper cleans windowglass to a sparkling deameanor, kinda like Don’s personality. The subscription form can be located below the latest photograph of Don at work.

Where ever there is free food and something to gulp one may locate Editor Don Russell. His most recent foray into the public eye was at the WSMC welcoming BBQ for the “new Frank” aka Sarah Cantrell, FNP. Although he pretended to be there to cover the news, once again he spent time gabbing and hobnobbing and appeared to be doing little work. But then we all know that about Russell. He tells a good story.

Not a whole lot can be said about Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger. He  is loved by children and dogs. He has a few friends. Irene, his beloved, puts up with him. He goes to St. Charles Church often. He quit smoking, and his right hand office gal, Jill, is suffering because of it. He has a new knee and his hair is getting long again. Would someone please tell him it is time for a haircut, and remind him to start working on his autobiography.

A haircut, beard trim and new shirt would help Editor Don Russell both personally and professionally.

This week the world famous April 1 edition of the Mountain Messenger will be published on Thursday, April 4. Often when the April Fool’s Day of the Mountain Messenger is published on April 1, there is confusion as to the stories and many wonder how Don Russell, the Editor, gained the information contained as a morsel of truth often lies within the facts. This week is bound to create a furor as it is published later than the 1st of April and many newspaper readers believe that last week’s issue was the April 1st issue as it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between the fabled Fools Day issue and the mundane everyday run of the mill news issue mostly because of the entertainment routinely supplied by reading the Mess. At any rate if you don’t have a subscription order.. up now, because this issue will fly off the news racks. One edition of the April 1st Mountain Messenger recently fetched $1589 on Ebay, so don’t miss out on this valuable collector’s item.

Recently Don Russell attended a Town Hall Meeting where Congressman Doug LaMalfa met with his constituents. Don acted very professionally and many in attendance considered him a real newspaper man. Those of us who know Don realize that although he is real, professional demeanor is a real stretch as those who don’t know who he is may just think he is off the street looking for a warm place to sit and maybe have a glass of milk or punch. At any rate, if you read the Mountain Messenger you will see he has a lively wit and is not intimidated or frightened of any subject. This is the man who once had a headline calling the Sheriff “Chicken S***” , but I digress, he was at a meeting and I was there too..

The Mountain Messenger is just one of those publications you have to read to believe and then you will not believe it. And rightly so- as the Editor Don Russell has a peculiar take on all things news. He has a unique way of then putting that take down on paper. He is known for many things, one of the biggest is the way he snarls on Wednesdays as he tries to fill up all that white space. Fortunately there is usually only Jill in the office while he is snarling although witnesses have attested others have approached and if they stand in a subservient manner without speaking or making eye contact until he acknowledges their presence he may border on civility for a moment. At any rate it is important to read the The Mountain Messenger and if you can afford a subscription to subscribe as it is read world wide, even in Ireland as you can see from this photo. The subcription form is below and be sure to tell Don you got it from www.sierracountyprospect.org.

The Mountain Messenger, written and published in the little mountain town of Downieville is as rustic and charming as the surroundings. Don Russell, the Editor, and his Gal Friday, Jill Tahija, (who does everything except what Don does and no one knows what Don does), manage to publish this on real paper every week. You can buy it from a news stand anywhere in Sierra County and most of Nevada County or have it mailed to you by buying a subscription almost anywhere in the world (depending on the postage) but for sure anywhere in the USA, so fill out the subscription form below and subscribe as it is becoming difficult to think of things to say about Don every week here.. Do not think you are reading the Messenger online, you aren’t … the real thing is so much better… there is so much more,  they are such a good newspaper, you can’t compare it too… oh wait a minute, I mean…this, the sierracountyprospect.org is good too… but I’m talking about the stuff on paper… well anyway…

3/6/13 The Mountain Messenger – News in the Sierra

Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger has a reputation for printing the news fairly and accurately or unfairly and unaccurately depending on whom one may be asking.  Personally I believe that both statements are correct depending on what Don may be writing about. One thing is for sure, one never wonders what Don’s take on the situation is, although it is hard to tell what his political persuasion is as he may be all over the map when he votes. We are sure that he votes, because politicians curry his favor. Someday, Russell will write his autobiography in the style of Hunter S. Thompson and be world famous, now he just resembles Mark Twain. Not sure what this is about but just wanted to say a few words about Don.

Tim Holabird, who works for Congressman Doug LaMalfa wonders what Russell is writing and how he learned to use a computer.

The Mountain Messenger – News in the Sierra

2/27/13

Many readers have wondered about Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger. His life has been a mystery and other than knowing he despises children,  attends church at St Charles, and tends to pick on the powerful, little has been public about his private doings. Recently a picture surfaced via one of his close cohorts, Mary Johnson the town resident shrink and tennis coach, which demonstrates there may be reasons he is so secretive. One can only speculate, was he really once a super model? Or maybe the ruler of a far away nation…. I don’t know, we may never know, we can only hope one day Sir Don will pen an autobiography titled, “My Life Up to and Including Sierra County and Beyond”, I will certainly read the reviews on Amazon, and print choice excerpts in SCP. I can hardly wait. If you feel the same, please write a letter or email to Don at mtnmess@cwo.com asking him to write his life story. Don’t mention this….
