Mountain Messenger (dirty tricks) 4/19/17

The Mountain Messenger is getting loony in it’s elder age…. there was a knock on my door and two young ladies were there suggesting that I go have lunch with them at Coyoteville. One of the young ladies was the daughter of Milly, I believe her name is Melody and the other was the daughter of Jerri, someone who works collecting taxes, and I believe her daughter’s name is Alice. They told me Milly would buy my lunch. This seemed very suspicious to me, as Milly knows that Wednesday is deadline day for the Prospect so that I publish in the evening and they publish in the morning, it seemed as though she wanted to throw a fly in my ointment. Well it certainly wasn’t Alice or Melody’s fault and I thanked them for the invitation and then loaned them my vehicle so they could drive to lunch as obviously their own Mother’s were unwilling to go to that length. They had a good lunch and my car was returned in one piece. So be careful about lunch invites from Milly.

4/19/17 Patrick at Coyoteville offers some ice tea to Alice and Melody. Patrick loves vegetables.

Mountain Messenger (lunch anyone?) 4/12/17

Mountain Messenger is once again at the top of the list of media outlets with the most interesting take on real news in all of the western United States. It is amazing, most people are struck dumb by this information, however it is based in belief. I talked to Ralph and Irma this week and they will be in town for the Easter Egg Hunt…. they said it was better that they attend rather than Don Russell as Don’s penchant for stealing candy from kids is well known. We don’t understand why, it may have to do with his sister who might have hidden his candy as a child, we don’t know this we are just speculating. Don always thought he was an only child (everyone who knows him thought he was too) hence his resentment of children when he found out there were others. We could all give Don an Easter present by purchasing an advertisement saying how great his writing ability is…. writing a letter doesn’t count… he will print it but it won’t help pay Jill and Milly’s cute little paychecks.

4/12/17 Larry & Lee wonder why Don won’t have lunch with them anymore. When asked they said to tell him lunch would be on Lee next time around, and beg Don to please join them… or Milly… they would accept Milly….

Mountain Messenger (Real Bossy) 4/5/17

Lots of people think that Don Russell is the Boss of all things paper in Downieville, few people realize that he has a Boss and that Boss is actually allowed to approach him on Wednesdays and look directly into Don’s eyes. I know, it is amazing and we all wonder what that is like, must be thrilling. Speaking of being thrilled I know Don was thrilled to meet and actually speak with Dana Gioia, California’s Poet Laureate, He stopped doing his crossword puzzle leaned back in his chair and listened intently at the Board Meeting, I’m not sure if that ever happened again, except of course when Don is having a dialogue with David Prentice the County Counsel, and then he is usually gnashing his teeth too, however I digress. Don also got to speak directly with Dana and then he went to the luncheon and became even chummier…. I’m wondering how District Atty Larry Allen feels about this… maybe he should thought twice about having lunch with CC Prentice.

4/5/17 The Boss, Jim Roos enjoying dinner at Jaada’s, it is noted that Don was not invited.

Mountain Messenger (friendships) 3/29/17

Here is a photo at Coyoteville on Monday, it pains me to think how this photo will be a pinprick to Don Russell’s belief that Larry Allen is his only best friend. Larry has expanded his source of friendship and is having lunch with “Closed Session” David Prentice. If you ever have attended a Sierra County Board of Supervisors meeting you will understand the most hated words Don might hear is the Board Chair announcing they are going into closed session and Don is ejected kicking and screaming from the Boardroom. Maybe the second words he hates most are from Sgt Anderson or Sheriff Standley stating, “that’s not public information”. It is difficult being Don, he is always standing up for truth and knowledge and being shuffled around with words he hates to hear. Unless you are buying a subscription or an ad, he does like to hear, “yeh, save me money and give me a two year subscription.” He also likes it when he is approached with eyes cast down and the words, “may I speak” asked on Wednesdays, he knows you understand his need for total domination and room to think. What to see him actually happy? Buy an ad, any ad, Easter ads are nice and it is almost here.

3/29/17 Normally this would be a photo of Larry Allen (who is known as Don’s best and maybe only friend) and Don Russell at Coyoteville for lunch, however County Counsel David Prentice appears to be edging his way into the relationship… you can see Larry is deep in thought wondering if this could be a mistake……

Mountain Messenger (celebration) 3/22/17

It is soooooo…. difficult to write about Don Russell, Editor of the Mountain Messenger every week, mostly he doesn’t do anything too interesting… it is just write, write, write with him…. all of his efforts are in print on paper… one rarely sees him in public unless he is at St. Charles Church and on occasion Coyoteville Cafe with Larry (his one real friend). Well he does appear at the Board of Supervisors and many other meetings involving Sierra County where he gleans the news. He does that better than anyone else in the Sierra County world of journalism. His mother is very proud of him being the conscientious person he has grown into, not much gets by him that’s for sure. Be sure to support the Mountain Messenger so Don is able to have lunch at Coyoteville. He also likes Jaada’s as it is next door to his church…Now’s the time to make plans for your Easter Day ads in the Messenger. Little kids love to read about the Easter Bunny.

3/22/17 Sheryl, Bill and Lee celebrate when they realize Don isn’t at Coyoteville and their lunches will be serene…

Mountain Messenger (and Mexico trivia) 3/15/17

Don Russell has a lot on his plate lately, he is driving a new car, involved in investigative journalism and still has to deal with Milly, Jill, Ralph, Irma, Brutus, Scott and me. Penelope Snow is part of the mix usually but she is on sabbatical in Mexico. She was concerned she would not be able to cross the border soon, she is a little confused about whether it is okay to go to Mexico but if you are there then are you allowed to come back to the U.S. nobody at the Mess really had an answer, so she decided to take a chance and go before the Wall is built. Although she is a capable bookkeeper evidently she does not have a good feel for geography or maybe the politics of international travel. But I digress, we were talking about Don Russell and his new car. He really likes it. I haven’t been asked to enjoy a ride in it, could be because after the first time I rode to Quincy with Don driving I swore never to get in a car with him again… anyone who drives with Don will understand. I may have told you this before… it’s one of those unforgettable experiences.

Chili & Mountain Messenger (have car will) 3/8/17

Don Russelll won first place in the Great Yuba Pass Chili Cook-Off last weekend, most people think that Steve Sharp, ruler of St Charles and Jenny Varn won but Don thinks it was him… he could be confused because he just bought a new car. Don is very excited about his new car, because he “knows a lot about cars”.  Most anyone who knows Don would agree he knows a lot about cars and a little about Chili, although if his Chili tastes good one generally understands Irene is responsible. I kind of feel bad for Don who has always wanted to be the big winner, he might have in his younger days, I can’t recall, being older than him…. you can help him feel better by buying an ad or a subscription to the Mountain Messenger. If you don’t want or already have a subscription think about a gift subscription to someone you love… or maybe an enemy someone you don’t like… that works too. If your enemy reads the Mess you can write Letters to the Editor about stuff that will make them grind their teeth at night…

Mountain Messenger (Chill w/Don) 3/1/17

This is the weekend when you can let Don know how you really feel about him… well at least give an opinion on his Bleeding Heart Liberal Socialistic (made in Russia America) Chilii (thanks Irene) at the Great Yuba Pass Chili Cookoff. The Judges this year are all from west of the Yuba Pass so Don is a cinch to win…. or he will call the whole event rigged… so to avoid the ugliness and rancor experienced in the recent presidential election please vote for the Don, the honest, truthiness speaking/writing  man deserving of the title The Don, he swears there was no assistance from Russian recipes or chefs, he does it all on his own (Irene is an American Democrat) So be at the Yuba Pass SnoPark, Hwy 49 on Saturday March 4, 2017 to taste many different good and bad chili’s from a plethora of local and worldwide cookers and cast your vote for Don. Please, because if he loses it turns into a really ugly week for Milly and Jill. PS: in talking to Don this week, he said: “I know a lot about cars.” More on this next week.

Mountain Messenger (major player) 2/22/17

The Mountain Messenger what can I say that I haven’t said before about the wonderful talented marvelous staff at the oldest weekly newspaper in California. The staff continues to grow and is probably the most outspoken truthiness journalism anyone might ever read anywhere (except here of course). In case you forgot who the staff is here’s a reminder, Don Russell, Editor -Jill, Asst to All Others and ROTP – Penelope Snow, pays the bills, writes the checks -Irma, correspondent and columnist – Ralph, Personnel Mgr – Scott, Co-pilot to Don –  Angie, Circulation Director – Brutus, Security and of course Milly who oversees everything. I may have mentioned all this before, but I don’t think so, so mostly what this means is unless you renew or get a new subscription to the Mess for you or your father-in-law Jill will never get a raise so it is time to pony up, bite the bullet and buy an ad or subscription today.

2/22/17 Many of these people may work at the Mountain Messenger and we need to support American Workers.

Mountain Messenger (skills rule) 2/15/17

The Mountain Messenger loves education. If you forgot Valentine’s Day just put an ad to your sweetie/loved one/enemy in the paper telling them it is Don’s fault the gift is late. Whether it is in this week or next week won’t matter because it is Don’s fault.

Mountain Messenger (Don & DeVita) 2/1/17

An unusual event took place last Sunday when the DeVita, Don Russell, Millicent, CR aka Paul, Randy, Danny & Joe, Donato, Leo, Gabby, Newbie, EvaLinda and me were in the same room having lunch, an especially scrumptious lunch at Los Dos in Sierraville and peace reigned… there were no fisticuffs seen or curses heard. Probably because DeVita did most of the talking to this captive audience. He pretty much an authority on almost everything so we just raptly listened. Alaska is in for a treat and we will miss the family for sure. But if you have to go somewhere to visit someone, Alaska is the place to see.  So we had a week to clear up after the last flurry of storms and we are preparing for the next. We can only hope  the power stays on for the Super Bowl Sunday… don’t want to miss those commercials and 1/2 time show. Oh, I forgot for a moment that this is the Mountain Messenger news column. Hmmm, it is a great newspaper and well worth reading and if you get a subscription you will be entertained all year, or two… take the deal and get a two year subscription.

2/1/17  DeVita wonders where he is and how he got there…while Russell thinks he is alone… apparently only water is being consumed at this summit meet.

Mountain Messenger (Alternative News) 1/25/17

Well, Don Russell and I have come to an agreement. Fortunately for us, Kellyanne Conway gave us the clue we needed …. “alternative facts”… so that is it, we agreed when we disagree it is because of the alternative reality we live in meaning alternative facts are okay, after all reality is in the eyes of the beholder.  I  woke up this morning and as I lay in bed trying to convince Paten (Patty’s Cat who lives with Spike, Jasper, Henry and Blossom) to move so I could get up, I thought about possibly that is what happened and there is an alternate universe we have suddenly shifted into. Anyhow to deep to think about without coffee so I got up.

Meanwhile it is 2017 and if we ignore the world outside of Sierra County we have a lot to look forward too, the SnowSoul Ball in February, the great Yuba Pass Chili Cookoff the first weekend in March, there will most likely be snow on the Pass, always makes the hot chili even more delectable. I believe the Judges this year come from the West side of the Pass, good news for Don Russell and ???  Scott McDermid is home, he’s okay, everyone can breathe again. Brutus enjoyed his vacation with Dan and Donna but is happy to see the main source of food has returned.

1/25/17 This not Don Russell, we believe it is Bookkeeper Penelope Snow who works almost as hard as Milly.

Mountain Messenger (never wrong) 1/18/17

He’s baaccckkk…. from visiting his Mommy and all is right in the world of Downieville. More or less, maybe… Strangely I haven’t seen him since he is home, he is avoiding me… I don’t know why… it might be because he has been appointed to the RAC for Sierra County and believes he is too good for me…  Ha …. will he be surprised. But life is back to normal upstairs, Just a side note here… at this moment in time… I think I love Don & Milly.. but that’s another story.

Meanwhile be sure to buy your subscription to the Mountain Messenger so you can read about any other information about my possible motive for smiling and singing as I left the office. Fortunately my  love  lasts  forever as Babe Lewis could attest whenever we had a fight about politics or my ethnic background.

Mountain Messenger (master of the slide) 1/11/17

The Mountain Messenger is having as many problems as the rest of the county this week..The power popping on and off… speaking of power this is a great time to thank PG&E and CalTrans for all the amazing work they have been doing this winter. Between the mud and rock slides on almost every county and state roadway and the trees falling on power lines it has not been an easy week for those employees out there getting things back in order for us. Thank you so much. I know it’s a job and you are paid for it but you all go above and beyond and we are so grateful to you.  Although there are areas where the power is still out and the roads are impassible it is good old Mother Nature who is responsible or maybe a little human interference creating climate change and the status quo is rapidly changing. At any rate Thank you to all the hard working people while we may not have power we are comfortable in our homes and shelters while the workers are out there trying to get us back to normal whatever normal is now…. so back at the Messenger the paper may be a little late this week, things have happened that made things a little more difficult than usual, but never fear… eventually like the mail (that didn’t get through today, the paper will appear in your POB.

1/11/17 Part of the Messenger problems…. not sure the dark clothing in the middle of the slide might be Don Russell, no one is sure if he is really in Detroit with his Mommy.

Mountain Messenger (no bad weather) 1/4/17

Don Russell is very disappointed this week because the nasty miserable weather resulted in a cancellation of the January 3rd Board Meeting. Don believes the Supervisors are Wimps, I on the other hand believe it was the right thing to do. The roads were bad, and CHP and others were suggesting we stay off the roads if possible. I can see this is one of those issues that could leap into the forefront of county concerns and turn into an all out war. Luckily Don does not like ones and zeros and thinks that Twitter is a bird, so it won’t last past this week’s edition, which of course is less pages because not much but weather happened here the past week or so. Milly is concerned for Jill, because Don tends to take his ire and place it with her. If Don is not happy, Jill is not happy. If Jill is not happy George and Rebecca are seriously in trouble.  So now is this anyway to start a New Year? Be sure to let Don know how much you enjoy his pith and wit keeping you informed on how the world turns in Sierra County.
